FraKctured - live performances - audient report

20/11/00 - Berklee College of Music Performance Center in Boston, MA.

Last night in Boston, King Crimson created a sonically explosive implosion at the Berklee College of Music performance Center. This incredible event now resides in my memory as the best show I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing.

Fellow club member, darkside_sith03307, other friends and I attended the concert together. Five of us in all. I enjoyed a generous appetizer of Jagermeister on the rocks during our trip down to Boston (about 1.5 hours).

The venue was perfectly designed, w/seating for about 1,300 I'm guessing. Not a bad seat to be found in the house (although, they could leave more space for your LEGS!)

Play list: (the order may be slightly off, but I believe I'm recalling every song here)

1. ThraK
2. Larks' Tongues in Aspic Pt. IV
3. Thela Hun Ginjeet
4. I have a Dream
5. ConstruKction of Light
6. Into the Frying Pan
7. ProzaKc Blues
8. Dinosaur
9. Improv/FraKctured (this is where I crapped my pants)
10. Red
11. Frame by Frame

encore 1:
12. (Adrian walks on alone and picks up his acoustic) kick ass acoustic version of Three of a Perfect Pair
13. (Adrian walks off, the other three guys walk on)
Improv (from ProjeKct X maybe?)
exit again,
2nd encore:
14. Elephant Talk
final exit
house lights come on........
....I.....head to the men's room to dispose of my shorts.....good thing I was wearing a pair of "Oops, I crapped my Pant's" disposable undergarments.

The show started at about 7:45 pm and they tore right into it with a blistering rendition of ThraK.....then,when they stopped at the end of the song, they paused for about 25 seconds and the theater was unbelievably and eerily silent. 1300+ people, and dead silence. Like folks were just mesmerized, hypnotized, waiting for the next bit of ear candy to explode from the sound system.

They played both sinisterly and beautifully all at the same time with the high points being the blistering rendition of "FraKctured", "Larks' IV" and the encores. The show ended at about 9:30, making the show about 1:45 long. I wish I was going to see them again tonight for the second show, but alas, I am back to reality.

I can now die happily knowing I have seen the best live musical spectacle ever. If KC are coming to your area and you are still mulling over whether to attend or not, please do. It will be worth every bit of effort to gain your admission...and then some.

From Trey Gunn's diary at www.treygunn.com

November 20-21, 2000 Berkeley Theater, show #1 & #2 / Boston, MA

Pretty decent shows. The first night was quite hard because of the very
formal setting of this place. I think I have to say, after having played
here two nights, that I would rather not play this place again. It was a
very formal seated theater. It even had the vibe of doing a 'clinic.' This
was especially hard the first night because we have gotten used to a more
rock and roll vibe for the performance.

The first night felt a bit stale and cold to me. I think the audience was
quite happy with the performance, but it sagged for me from the middle
on-wards. The second night took off much more, even though it also sagged
in the middle. It's funny that doing this show in a rock club means that we
can take a little bit more time between the pieces. However in this hall,
the silence was so deafening between the pieces that it seemed to be
painful.

Off to Montreal.
